PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS: The bmw S65 engine is a all aluminum V8 engine found in the 2008-2013 M3. The S65 is fragile compared to the predecessor’s cast iron engine block. The S65 features a 2-piece block.
OBJECTIVE: To recreate the lower half of the engine block(bed plate) much more rigid. To serve as a brace for the engine to keep it from flexing which usually result in bearing failure.
APPROACH: I reverse engineered the bed plate and added as much mass to it as I could. I modeled it in Solidworks and programed it in MasterCAM. I machined it out of 7075 plate leaving .05” in the bearing seats. The test bed plate is now being married to an engine block upper half. Nest they will have the bearing seats machined together to match perfectly before assembly and testing.
